The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a diverse cast of brilliant actors. Chris Hemsworth looks like he could really be a Norse God, Robert Downey Junior has redefined the Iron Man character, and even obscure characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy have been revitalized by Chris Pratt’s incredible abs.
With a host of new heroes getting their own movies—Black Panther, Spider Man, Captain Marvel—fans have been demanding dedicated movies for members of the original Avengers team, including Black Widow and Hawkeye. After Black Widow was speculated to get her own standalone, Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye, was hurt at his exclusion.

After Black Widow was speculated to get her own standalone, Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye, was hurt at his exclusion.
“I feel like the MCU just likes to dump on me,” Renner said in an emotional interview. “Most people didn’t even recognize me in my thirty second cameo in Thor—yeah, that was me—and then I ended up as Loki’s bitch in The Avengers. I mean, come on, I’m the only one of the original six who doesn’t get a standalone movie!”
With each (unconfirmed) rumor about a new MCU film, centered around War Machine or Scarlet Witch or even Howard the Duck, Renner grew more discouraged about his future with Marvel. However, that all turned around when director Joss Whedon convinced the studio to honor the character.
“I fought tooth and nail for a Hawkeye film,” Whedon said. “Not a miniseries on Netflix, not Hawkeye vs. Falcon: Bird Wars, but a motion picture dedicated to his character alone. He deserves it.”
Plot details of the movie have not yet been released, although Whedon is confident they can “scare up a villain” for the character. Renner was ecstatic at the news, and has already started hyping it up on social media despite the fact that it’s slated for release in 2020.
“Bet you didn’t see that coming,” Renner later said on Twitter.
